The present study was conducted to examine the effects of a stress management program for enhancing older adults¡¯ health and quality of life. Of 12 older adults living in a small and medium-sized urban area who started a 10-week group-administered stress management program, 7 participants completed the program. The program consisted of psychoeducation about stress, meditation and relaxation, cognitive restructuring, behavioral activation, and problem-solving. Compared to pre-program, program completers showed significant or marginally significant improvements in depression, perceived health status, and stress responses at post-program. These improvements were maintained at 1-month follow-up. In addition, the dependent measures yielded large or very large effect sizes both from pre-program to post-program and from pre-program to follow-up. While effect size for emotion dysregulation was small from pre-program to post-program, it was large from pre-program to follow-up. In contrast, effect size for dysfunctional attitude was small both from pre-program to post-program and from pre-program to follow-up. Therefore, these results suggest that the stress management program developed in this study is effective in improving depression, stress responses, perceived health status, and emotion dysregulation in community-dwelling older adults.
